A while back I
discussed the advantages of using organic make up and skin care products. Everything
you put on your skin is absorbed through your skin and eventually enters your
blood stream and gets deposited into organ tissue. So if you apply skin care products with
cancer causing ingredients, you are playing Russian Roulette with your
health. In light of a resent study by
The Center of Environmental Health, I would like to revisit this subject.
This study
concentrated on the chemical cocamide diethanolamine, or better known as cocamide
DEA. Cocamide DEA is a chemically
modified form of coconut oil that is used as a thickening agent and foaming
agent in many products, especially shampoos, skin care and make up products. Cocamide DEA is also a KNOWN carcinogen. Surprised?!....SHOCKED?!! You may be asking, if it is a known
carcinogen, why is it allowed in consumer products? BUYER Beware!!! In other words….Educate Yourself. Become an informed consumer. Do not depend on government agencies to do
your dirty work for you.
Since cocamide DEA is
listed by the state of California as a known carcinogen in 2012, based on the
assessment done by The International Agency for Research on Cancer, in the
state of California, manufacturers
are required to include a warning on the label…..“WARNING; this product contains cocamide DEA, a
substance known to the state of California
to cause cancer.” But a recent study by
the Center for Environmental Health showed this cancer causing chemical was
found in 98 shampoos, soaps and other personal care products sold by major
national retailers in California
without posting such warning. Does Connecticut require the same protections against products
containing cocamide DEA as California??? And the answer is “no”. After talking to several people at Consumer
Protection, Connecticut
takes the lead from the FDA (which, by the way, is not saying much) that
cocamide DEA is perfectly safe. I was
told by the Department of Consumer Protection that there are a lot of
ingredients in products that are carcinogenic or not safe but the FDA approves
of them anyway. Which only goes to prove
my statement that product ingredients in this country are not regulated,
especially when it comes to makeup and skin care products…..not to mention
pesticides and chemical lawn service, but that is another article.
Nearly 100 items at
retailers like Walgreens, Rite Aid, Sears, Target, Sophora, Safeway, Kohl’s,
Trader Joes, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Babies R Us and many others in
the state of California were found to contain this chemical without warning to
consumers. And I am sorry to say, some
products marketed as Organic even tested positive for the carcinogen cocamide
DEA.
If you are using
Olive Oil Shampoo by “Organics by Africa’s
Best”, you are shoving cocamide DEA into your scalp. You can get this lovely cancer bomb at
CVS. If you are using TUI, a sulfite
free shampoo purchased at Sephora, you are washing your hair with cocamid
Dea. Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo put out by
Organix contains DEA and you can pay for this carcinogen at CVS. Are you using Paul Mitchell
Products?.....bingo. Anti Bacterial Hand
Soap by Simple Pleasures is not a very good idea….you can get this at Kohl’s
but I would not advise it….you shouldn’t be using anti-bacterial soap anyway,
but that is another article. Organic
Cleansing Shampoo by Design Essentials contains DEA and is sold at JC
Penny’s. If you think purchasing
products by Australian Organics will be a healthy choice….not. If you go to end of my blog, I have the

Are you a little
shocked and amazed? Why?, because so
many products you buy has cancer causing agents, even the ones marketed as Organic? In this country the U.S. Skin Care Market is
not regulated….that is why I prefer to use skin care, shampoos and make up products
manufactured in Europe. One company that I trust so much, I use their
products myself is Neal’s Yard Remedy Organics….so much so that I have become a
sales consultant for the company. And
before that, I purchased my shampoos and skin care products from Aubrey
Organics…..another company I would not hesitate to use. It is a safe practice to buy Organic,
especially when it comes to what you put on your hair and skin…..but be an
educated consumer. It is still a buyer
beware world.
